Same Sex Marriage Should Be Legal Marriage has long been a traditional aspect of Western Society. It is widely recognized as a ritual between both man and woman. Marriage is deemed as a holy matrimony meant to publically announce a commitment between two heterosexual individuals. For many traditional reasons and religious beliefs the institution of marriage has been denied to homosexuals. Publically opposing the idea of marriage by homosexuals openly shows bias towards equality of citizens under the law and places heterosexuals and homosexuals on separate planes as human beings. The act of marriage is a sanction between traditionally complementary sexes (male and female) universally seen as a heterosexual ritual. This is incorrectly assumed, people don’t know whether those couples would be more likely to work or even place a higher standard on marriage. William J. Bennett, a prominent cultural conservative and cultural issues writer, argues in an op-ed column â€Å"Against Gay marriage† in the Washington Post (21 may 1996) that allowing same-sex marriage would create extended social chaos. Popular opinion deems that complementary sexes alone can complete each other, and incorrectly recognizes same-sex marriage as a gateway for incest and bigamy. Homosexuality isn’t the same as incestuous behavior; making same-sex marriage legal doesn’t condone incest nor bigamy. Yet this kind of scrutiny is ‘justifiably’ placed upon homosexuals. The government shouldn’t be able to state; homosexuals can’t get married, and couples don’t have connection, feelings and devotion to one another. If the government can dictate to homosexuals which actions can be performed the same should be done to heterosexuals to keep playing fields all around equal.
